Mass Spectrometry System is one of the important facilities of National Center for Protein Science (Shanghai) (NCPSS). The discovery of Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry brings biological, clinical and pharmaceutical research a great breakthrough. Recently Mass Spectrometry further becomes a vital tool, which complement to X-ray, NMR, and Electron Microscopy (EM) in the area of structural biology research. MS Facility provides the best collaboration with both scientific and technical expertise and state-of-the-art high-performance, tandem mass spectrometric instrumentation. Major research focuses within the MS facility are: 1) multi-dimensional protein identification (MudPIT) in large scale, as well as accurate mass measurements of intact proteins, lipids, etc. 2) analysis of non-covalent protein-protein and protein-ligand complexes and supramolecular coordination clusters, 3) analysis of all kinds of post-translational modifications, 4) quantitative analysis of protein expression and post-translational modifications.
Significant instrumentation in the facility covers major mass analyzers which includes five Orbitrap mass spectrometers (Thermo two LTQ-Orbitrap Elite (one with electron transfer dissociation (ETD)), one LTQ-XL and two Q Exactives), one MALDI TOF/TOF (AB 5800), one hybrid triple quadrupole linear ion trap (6500 QTrap), three QTOF (Agilent 6530, 6550 and AB 5600 triple tof); and two triple quadrupole (Agilent 6490 and Waters TQS).
