On May 16, 2015, Professor Yu Cao from the National Center for Protein Science Shanghai (NCPSS) presented a wonderful talk in “We Love Science (Season I)” speech show, a special event in National Science Week 2015 and Shanghai Science & Technology Festival held at Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility.
“We Love Science (Season I)” speech show is a special event featured by National Science Week 2015 and Shanghai Science & Technology Festival, where eleven “stars” from the fields of intelligence technology, biomedicines, new energy resource and maker education gathered to present a series fabulous lectures. Professor Yu Cao from the NCPSS received hearty rounds of applause for his unique and humorous speech style.
Titled with “Science: Approach and Enter”, Professor Cao’s speech entertained audience with vivid stories and baroque thoughts about science and scientist career. The title reflects his wish that more and more youths shall not only get close and touch science, but also be part of science and enjoy it.
In his speech, Professor Cao discussed the feasibility for youths to select scientist as their career development path by introducing his personal experiences and the social reality, and proposed an increasing demand for scientific talents in the future job market according to the change in structural transformation of China’s economy. He further overturned the concept that most of knowledge and skills learned in high school are going to be returned to one’s teacher after exam, since “scientists have to keep studying and learning forever in preparation for new challenges”. He pictured an amazing moment of scientific research for the people listening: ……calculating after data harvest like a thief decoding bank vaults in action movie until the computer screen stops scrolling with a command line flashing that “A unique solution found”, which offer you the precious experience of leading the whole world in pioneering the unknowns.
At last, he concluded his speech with a statement “Science could be very beautiful; Scientific research could be very cool; Scientists could rock their hearts”. His talk totally subverted the public stereotype for scientists as stiff and ineloquent people and thus was rewarded by cordial cheers and applause.
